At-Home Learning Platform Elevates Online Education

Here’s a blog post I wrote for longtime client Inly School to highlight their successful approach to virtual learning during the lockdown.

Custom instruction, counseling and enrichment for all ages

Daily classroom meetings and one-on-one teacher check-ins are still part of each student’s day at Inly School, an independent Montessori-based school for grades PreK–8. A full schedule of curricular and co-curricular classes are still delivered by each teacher, along with after-school enrichment activities like yoga, cooking, ballet and Tae kwondo. In the Upper Elementary and Middle School classes there are additional “help desk” hours, where students can pop in, hang out, and ask questions — just like they’d do on an ordinary school day.

To minimize disruption to learning, the new Google-based platform was developed by a team of Inly tech specialists and teachers over the school’s spring break in March. During the spring and summer of 2018, I developed the content and curriculum for all four levels — Pre-K, Grades K–2, Grades 3–5, and Grades 6–8 — plus training modules for the Educator Support Center, at-home activity guides and lesson plans to be used in conjunction with FDA (Federal Food and Drug Administration) charts and guidelines.

Celebrating Freedom of the Press: Finland News Museum

July 16, 2018
News Museum Helsinki Finland

News Museum Helsinki Finland

En route to the Design Museum during a visit to Helsinki last fall, I spied a sign on a side street for something called the Päivälehti News Museum. Intrigued, I took a detour and walked inside for a quick visit. I stayed for over an hour, admiring the old-school machinery and interactive displays packed into the two small floors. Along with honoring press freedom and the profession of journalism, the museum aims "to promote the ability to interpret the media and particularly, to encourage children and adolescents to read."
